Faith Farm Enabling
Garden.
Hope Outreach Faith Farm
works hand-in-hand with other organizations in the community to help the
disadvantaged for a more positive focus on life. Located at 820 W.
Cherokee, the garden plot incorporates 14 raised production beds, composting
area and an attractive ornamental bed across the front. Our beds are filled
with vegetables, herbs, small fruits and beautiful cut flowers grown using earth friendly
methods.
Classes: We also share
opportunities for other "mission-minded" gardeners in our community to develop
their own family gardens. This Fall we're having a series of Saturday
garden training classes
through December. Sign up and
join us. You won't be disappointed.
friends.
History: In 2009 much of the garden was
renovated to created an Enabling Garden for those with mobility impairments.
Paths were resurfaced in the main areas with compacted decomposed granite making
them accessible to those using wheel chairs, walkers or canes. Large planters
and raised beds were added to enable these same individuals to sit or stand with
support and enjoy gardening activities. With the generous donation of funds and
labor a permanent shade pavilion was built to provide a shady area for resting
or utilizing the built in work station area. Programs will be designed and
garden activities offered to local assisted living centers in 2010.
The primary purpose of Faith
Farm is to provide Garden Therapy; using plants and horticulture activities to
improve the social, educational, psychological and physical well-being of
individuals in a variety of situations. Working in a garden setting has been
proven to help people relax, reduce stress and provide exercise. In addition it
can improve self-esteem, encourage creativity and teaches cooperation and
problem solving.
Other purposes include helping
teach the skills needed to raise food as well as generating income to help cover
the costs of the program by marketing fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs and
flowers at our Harvest Market. The Market is open on Tuesday evenings during the growing season and is held in the garden enabling people to
see how everything is grown.
I would be glad to provide a
program or give a guided tour to your small group. To make arrangements call us
at 237-4800
9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. weekdays. Volunteers are needed for the garden upkeep and
activities, please call for more information.
